Shin Koseki visits Belgian AI ecosystem in Brussels

This news is part of a special series following the daily life of a UNESCO Chair holder in the field

UNESCO Chair holder Shin Koseki recently visited Brussels as part of a five-week mission across Western Europe, Western Asia and North Africa.

In Brussels, Koseki met with UNESCO Chair collaborator Prof. Wouter Achten from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) to advance their ongoing collaboration on the Twin Transition — a research project exploring how ecological and digital transformations interact at a global scale. This work is supported by the G3, an international partnership between three leading French-speaking universities: Université de Montréal, ULB and the University of Geneva.

Koseki also visited FARI, Brussels’ cutting-edge AI research centre jointly operated by ULB and its Flemish counterpart VUB, where exchanges focused on responsible AI development and governance, urban digital twins and citizen participation — reestablishing the natural scientific alignment between FARI and the UNESCO Chair in Urban Landscape.
The trip was also an opportunity to meet with independent researcher and EPFL alumna Ana Povoas, a leading expert in citizen participation across Western Europe, and with aspiring PhD candidate Camille Lemaitre, who plans to begin doctoral studies in urban design at the Université de Montréal this fall.

This mission is made possible through the support of the FRQ, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO and the G3 global partnership.
